Two sisters, Patty Hill and Mildred Hill, wrote it for the children in Patty's kindergarten class. Patty ran the classroom and Mildred was the musician, and between them they needed a song simple enough for small children to sing each morning. The words back then were not about birthdays at all. In 2016 the case settled, and "Happy Birthday to You" was declared free for everyone. The song we'd always treated as ours finally, officially, became ours.
